Answer

Some have tried to suggest that this text shows an offering plate being passed around in church on Sunday. But if you read the context you’ll find that Paul was writing to the Corinthian Church asking them to set aside a little money so when he came, he could take it to the Christians in Jerusalem who were suffering from a famine. The first day of the week was the most likely time they received their pay and Paul wanted them to lay by them in store something he could quickly collect and take with him to Jerusalem. Nothing about a church service is mentioned at all. They were to store their offering by them at home, then give it to Paul when he came.

New King James

"Lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper."

New American Standard

"Put aside and save."

Amplified

"Put aside something and save it up as he has prospered."

This was the 9th and last of all the texts that mention Sunday, the first day of the week.

Harold Lindsell, editor of Christianity Today, said, "There is nothing in Scripture that requires us to keep Sunday rather than Saturday as a holy day." Nov. 5, 1976 . Dr. E. T. Hiscox, author of the ‘Baptist Manual’ wrote, "There is no scriptural evidence of the change of the Sabbath institution from the seventh to the first day of the week.” To suggest one of these texts authorized a change is to take Bible out of context.
