Question 8

Doesn’t the Bible say that grace does away with the law?

Bible

Romans 6:14

"Sin shall not have dominion over you; for you are not under the law, but under grace."

Romans 6:15

"Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? God forbid."

Romans 6:18

"Being then made free from sin, you became the servants of righteousness."

Answer

Everybody is either under the law or under grace. Since all of us have sinned, plus all of us have inherited Adam's sinful nature at birth, all of us are under the law, or under the penalty of the law. However, those of us who believe in Jesus, and have confessed our sins to Him and have repented from those sins, are free from the penalty of the law and are now under grace; Jesus has taken the penalty for the repentant sinner and has forgiven him/her. Does that mean we can go on sinning because we’re under grace? The Bible says, "God forbid." In other words, of course not! When Jesus frees us from sin's penalty, the Bible says we become servants of righteousness, or doing what's right.

How can I get my sins forgiven? 1 John 1:9 says, "If we confess our sins, He (Jesus) is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrigtheousness." (See more in Lesson 9)
