Question 14
Would a loving God torture forever those who choose not to accept Him?
Bible
1 John 4:8
Ezekiel 18:32
Answer
The Bible teaches that God is a loving Creator who loves His creation. The only reason for the Lake of Fire is to finally put an end to sin. It is Satan who is delights in the destruction of mankind. Satan has tried for years to make us think that God is the one who delights in the suffering of lost sinners. But the Bible tells us that God has "no pleasure in the death" of the wicked, that God wants all to "turn and live!" The main reason atheists tend to mock and reject Christianity is because of the teaching that God will plunge lost sinners into a place of fire and torment forever if they don't choose to accept Christ. An ex-athiest once told me, "I was open to the idea that there may be a god, but I was resolutely opposed to the idea of the Christian God because I could never believe in a God who would send someone to a place called hell to be tortured for all eternity. I cannot believe that a God of love and grace and mercy could be that kind of a God; its not sensible or rational. But once I was shown in scripture that God wasn't like that, I had no problem accepting Christianity." (anonymous)
"It is beyond the power of the human mind to estimate the evil which has been wrought by the heresy of eternal torment...The appalling views of God which have spread over the world from these teachings...have made thousands, yes, millions, of skeptics and infidels.” Great Controversy page 536
