The Bible says that all the world will "wonder" after the Beast. In other words, he will have influence worldwide. Of the 2.2 billion Christians worldwide, more than half are in the Catholic faith. In fact, the word Catholic means “Universal” which well describes this religious power which is established in nearly every country of the world today.

The Pope is considered by many to be the most influencial man in the world.
He is the only religious leader to address the United Nations. He is consulted by kings and nations worldwide. He has been allowed to address the US Congress. He heads, with 'infallible' authority, the 1.3 billion people in the largest Christian denomination on earth. All the world does indeed "wonder after" the Pope.
