Answer
The feet of iron and clay represented what was going to happen to the Roman Empire. Just as feet have 10 toes, the Roman empire was divided into 10 parts. Starting in 476 A.D. Rome was divided into ten kingdoms which made up modern Europe.
The 10 toes of iron and clay represented that Rome would not be overthrown by another single world power. Instead, Rome was to be divided into 10 parts. Starting around 476 A.D. barbarian tribes conquered and divided the great Roman Empire. These 10 divisions evolved into what was known as modern Europe. The original 10 tribes are depicted in the map below.
