Question 5
How did Jesus get out of the Pharisee's trap?
Bible
Matthew 22:19-21
"Show Me the tribute money. Whose image and inscription is on it? They said unto Him, Caesars's. Jesus said, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's and unto God the things which are God's."
Answer
Jesus didn’t answer yes and he didn’t answer no. He escaped yet another trap while at the same time teaching a lesson about paying taxes and giving offerings. If it belongs to Caesar, then give it to Caesar. If it belongs to God, then give it to God. The lesson for us today would be the same. If money is due in taxes, we should pay it. If it is owed to God, then we should pay that too. The Pharisees failed to trap Jesus, even though they felt certain they had him trapped either way he answered.
