Answer

The purpose of the law is to give us the knowledge of sin. The law tells us what is right and what is wrong. The Bible tells us that the law is like a mirror (James 1:23). We can look into a mirror to see what is wrong with the way we look. A mirror can show a person that they have a spec of dirt on their face, but it can't remove the dirt. The mirror only shows us the dirt so we can see our need of washing. Likewise, the law shows us our sin so we can go to Jesus for forgiveness and cleansing.
