Question 11
If keeping the law doesn’t save us, why keep it?
Bible
Hebrews 10:26
"If we sin willfully after we've received the knowledge of the truth, there remains no more sacrifice for sins."
John 14:15
"If you love Me, keep My commandments."
Answer
If we continue on in sin willingly (on purpose) after we have been shown the truth in God's word, the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross cannot cleanse us from our sin. The Bible says there is “a fearful looking forward to of judgment” (Heb 10:27) in such a case. In other words, if we sin on purpose, saying to ourselves, "its ok for me to sin because Jesus will just forgive me anyway", the Bible says that Jesus didn't sacrifice His life for that purpose. Many call this the sin of presumption, where a sinner presumes that Jesus will forgive so its ok to continue to sin. Jesus said, “if you love Me, keep My commandments.” Conclusion: Keeping the law doesn’t save us, but choosing to break God’s law purposely can cause us to be lost.
